Crossing El Saltillo

There's an excellent hiking route between Canillas de Aceituno and Sedella, along which is the hanging bridge, El Saltillo.

This route, which is nearly ten kilometres long, takes you through the Natural Park of Sierras Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama, and as of four years ago, across this spectacular hanging bridge.

This addition turned an already well known hiking route into an immensely popular one; something that the El Canillas de Aceituno Town Hall is very proud of. Hikers can enjoy the spectacular scenery with its backdrop of La Maroma, which reaches 2,069 metres in height (the highest peak in the Province of Málaga).

Also known as the El caminito del Rey de la Axarquía, the route runs along an irrigation channel (acequia) before coming to the hanging bridge, which is one of the three longest, pedestrian, hanging bridges in Spain.

If you’re coming from Canillas and you have grandkids with you, it’s probably best to make the bridge your turning-round point as the rest of the route to Sedella is harder going.

The bridge spans 54 metres and stands 70 metres above the river below and lies on the municipal border of Canillas de Aceituno (pop. 1,800) and Sedella (pop. 500).

If you’re thinking of having lunch out, then Canillas is a good choice as it is famous for its chivo al horno (roast suckling goat kid).

Finally, it is worth mentioning that when this bridge over Río Almanchares was inaugurated in October 2020 (with a budget of 600,000 euros), it came in same year as the Covid pandemic, so it was definitely a ‘breath of fresh air’ after the enforced ‘cloister’ atmosphere of that spring.
