Fines are a Fine Income

Perhaps there is something grotesque when a Town Hall announces how much money it expects to take through traffic & parking fines After all, it is not supposed to be a source of income, but a deterrent.

This is the case where the City Hall of Granada points out that it expects to increase its income with the implantation of the Low-Emission Zones in the city.

But without even counting this extra ‘bonus’ it already calculates that it will rake in 9.2-million euros in ordinary traffic fines in their 2025 budget.,

They have calculated that they will issue 22,097 fines in the Low-Emission Zones during next year. They even recognised that they also managed to fine a good number of foreigners during 2024.

This all comes from an economic-financial report that the Mayor of Granada, Marifrán Carazo, now has on her desk. The report states that the city will obtain 1,409,126 euros for traffic fines directly from the restrictions that will come into force in April next year.

So, the final figure is 22,097 fines within the LEZs and 145,011 euros in normal traffic fines during 2025 bringing in 9,247,351 euros to the municipal coffers.

As for foreign tourists; the ones that are encouraged to visit the city, they will bring in 607,500 euros, yet, the Municipal Treasurer has berated the Town Council because of the fines that were written out for foreign drivers during 2024, nothing actually came into the coffers.
