The 88-year-old woman, according to her relatives who were accompanying her when the accident happened, said that the victim was using a zebra crossing when the lorry knocked her down and killed her.

The accident took place close to midnight on Thursday the 15th on Calle Río de Oro in the El Llano area of the city of Gijón, almost level with the Centro Comercial de Los Fresnos.

The Policía Local de Gijón cordoned off the area and are investigating the incident. The company to which the refuse-collection vehicle belongs, Cogersa, confirmed that one of its lorries was involved in an incident and expressed its condolence for the family of the victim.
