Death Threats & The Mayor

"I've received hundreds of threats, many of them death threats," confesses the Mayor of Salobreña, María Eugenia Rufino, and until now, she has remained silent.

SAL Mayor Rufino Alba FeixasShe has been keeping silent, awaiting a lawcourt verdict in which she was accused of an electoral offence, rights infringements and knowingly issuing an unfair decision. A judicial decision was reached and the charges dismissed.

She said that those threats have affected her family; her two young daughters. She considers that persons connected with the local Vox party have been using social media to launch attacks that could be qualified as legally prosecutable, but she kept quiet

Mayor Rufino said in one instance a reporter for a national daily published her photo on social media saying that “this is the face of a prevaricator [abuser of authority].” She says that she had to put up with finding articles where the author spoke of her looks and his sexual fantasies.

This, she says, is where the line must be drawn; a line that the extreme right (Vox) regularly crosses to bring to the boil media speculation and distract from the party’s goal, which is to destroy the country’s democracy.

The accusation of abuse of authority and the issuing of unfair decision comes down to rejecting Macarena Olona’s request for empadronamiento so that she (Vox candidate) could run in the Andalusian Elections. But now the Ministry of Public Prosecution has made it clear that this was not the case. However, despite being able to sue her accusers, she has decided to let matters lie, judicially speaking — she’s tired of it all.

However, she has chosen to speak out now to say that not everything is acceptable in politics; there are limits.
