Bogus Vet & Animal Cruelty

Two individuals were arrested, accused of animal cruelty in the municipality of Peligros, which is in the comarca of Vega de Granada.

The 56-year-old man and the 42-year-old woman had been under investigation since August by the environmental department of the Guardia Civil, SEPRONA. Furthermore, the woman also stands accused of intrusismo profesional, i.e., posing as a veterinary surgeon when she is not qualified as one.

The police had got wind of a veterinary clinic in Peligros where they were supposedly mistreating pets that had been left with them, so they launched police operation Claridad 21.

Several months later SEPRONA managed to obtain the evidence they needed to make arrests. According to the police, they had found that the accused habitually kept pets that had been left with them for treatment in lamentable conditions.

Instruments used in surgery were reportedly rusty, disinfection duties were not being carried out in the cages. They pulled hair out to see if the animals had reflexes whilst under anaesthesia, as well as other things that caused suffering.

The police have counted on the collaboration of the Colegio Oficial de Veterinarios de Granada, who confirmed that the owner of the clinic is not a member. Veterinary surgeons upon graduating must register with an Official College of Veterinarians in their province as a legal requisite in order to practice.

Finally, this particular vet clinic was the one used unwittingly by several animal refuge associate for treatment of strays, so if proven guilty it will be a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire for those unfortunate animals.
