Pampaneira in the Alpujarra is celebrating its XXXIV Feria de Artesanía, Turismo y Agricultura Ecológica, with its last day on Monday.
Pampaneira is situated on the hillside overlooking the Barranco de Poqueira, right in the heart of the Alpujarra Granadina.
Above it is the road junction that will either take you to Capilleira and Bubión, or, on through the Alpujarra passing through Pitres, Pórtugos, Busquístar and Trevélez.
Pampaneira, then, is the gateway to the upper Alpujarra, it’s white houses blending with the snow in winter and its broadleaf trees and terraced fields in spring. It is no surprise then that it becomes the epicentre or these mountain-village communities when October comes around and its Handicraft and Eco-Farming Fair pulls in people from the coast, as well as from neighbouring villages.
If you’re into homegrown vegetables, handmade ornaments, clothes and pottery then you might not want to miss this country fair.
Go on, treat yourself to a drive up into the mountains for the day and enjoy the slow-motion bustle of a mountain village; the colours, the smells, the food… and above all, the change.
