A British lorry driver was caught with a dozen kilos of marihuana in his lorry as he waited to embark on a ferry at Santander Port bound for the UK.
The 32-year-old driver was rumbled by the strong smell of coming from one of the cars on the trailer. They took off a side panel and found several individual packages.
This led to a more detailed inspection of the rest of the cars and the transporter itself carried out by the Guardia Civil and customs police came up with a total of 41 packages with a combined content weight of 12.5kg of marihuana.
The packages had been impregnated with a strong-smelling substance like curry powder to throw off sniffer dogs.
The Port of Santander has recently acquired a ZBV Mobile Z Backscatter Cargo and Vehicle Screening System mounted in a large van enabling customs to quickly scan a vehicle.
