Ex-Mayor, Juan Carlos Benavides accuses the present Mayor, Trinidad Herrera, of letting Almuñécar’s top hotel project slip through her fingers; i.e. the 7-star hotel.
This comes after it was announced that the Danish developer behind the project has obtained a building licence to build around 200 luxury dwellings, but without the accompanying luxury hotel. The company says that it hasn’t given up on the idea of the hotel, but prefers to just go ahead with the dwellings for the moment.
Sr Benavides complained, “After nine years of obstacles and complications the local government gives the go-ahead for a residential development leaving the hotel in the drawer; a hotel that was going to create 600 extra jobs.”
The Mayor responded that the idea of luxury dwellings already existed in the project, which was approved under Benavides’ mayoralty. “In fact, the first phase of the housing began in August 2006 while he was in office, which like so many other [of his] operations, was annulled by a court sentence”, she pointed out, adding, “It seems his memory is failing him.”
