Unbelievably, perhaps, the ticket office belonging to the Nerja Caves has suffered another break in. This was the third burglary this year.
This time however the alarms worked correctly and the private security guard quickly alerted the Guardia Civil so that the burglars were scared off before they could swipe anything.
The break-in occurred around 02.45h in the early hours of yesterday with the thieves forcing the main entrance door, despite its special security characteristics. They had just enough time, however, to rifle through a couple of cabinets where archives files and admin documents are kept.
In previous burglaries they had better luck and made off with 35,000 euros in cash in the first one in January and 31,000 euros in July
“We have increased security to a maximum level, which has been demonstrated on this occasion,” said the Cave Foundation’s Manager, Chema Domínguez. He also said that the police have been given footage from the CCTV which captured the whole break in.
Finally, he also explained that following the July break-in they had decided not to keep cash in the said office over night.
