The Guardia Civil, Bomb-Disposal Squad was called in to handle an unexploded shell in a house in Lanjarón from the Civil-War period.
The Guardia Civil received a call from two locals and cordoned off the alley whilst TEDAX, as the squad is known, got to work removing the ordnance.
The mortar bomb, dating back to the 30s, had been discovered in ground floor room for animals (corral) belonging to a house on Calle Virgen del Pilar. This street is right next to the recently inaugurated pensioners’ home.
The owner of the house, an elderly woman, had asked two of her neighbours helped her clear out corral, which had become little more than a junk room as animals were no longer kept there.
The local scrap merchant, José Vera was being helped out by Antonio Heredia, when he came across this strange object. After giving it a good prod around and coming to the conclusion that it was an ageing piece of artillery ammunition, they put it to one side and called the Guardia Civil.
The TEDAX team examined the mortar round and announced that it was not in any danger of going off, so they removed it for controlled detonation in a quarry.
