The fire in Motril Port on the Azucena docks that broke out Friday afternoon consumed 7,000 tonnes of biomass. The heaps still glows but it is only about a fifth of its original size.
Even 48 hours later the heap of wood chippings, which was to be shipped to the UK amongst other destinations, still smolders giving of a plume of smoke visible from as far as Almuñécar.
Such was the intensity of the heat and the amount of burning embers pouring from the fire, the huge tyres on a heavy-duty vehicle used for moving loads on the dock caught light and only the quick intervention of firemen on the spot stopped the whole vehicle disappearing in flames.
In the end, fire-fighting units from Almuñécar, Motril, Nerja, Granada, Izanlloz and two Infoca units were called in, all of whom were stood down the next morning, leaving the Motril fire service in charge of the fire site. The reason that so many units were at hand was because of the proximity of the nearby fuel-storage tanks.
There is still no news on how the fire could have started.
