Opposition Party Considers Paseo Work Unnecessary

ALM Paseo Altillo OnLThe Almuñécar branch of the PSOE says that the Mayor’s intention to change the Paseo del Altillo into a 2-way system is not viable. It’s also unnecessary, they say.

“Apart from the fact that this is not the moment for laying out on large public works, what the Mayor is intending makes no sense,” said party official, Juan Moreno, because “it is not a priority as the Paseo was only built nine years ago.”

He said that the only thing that needs to be done is to sort out the paving stones that have sunk, causing dips in the road surface, which is just a question of maintenance.

He heavily criticised the Mayor for allocating funds to this project instead of using it to help Almuñécar families who are struggling.

In fact, he considers that the money would be better spent on sorting out the municipal market, which is withering away, or giving La Herradura the long-awaited paseo.

But his biggest concern was that the Town Hall was going to go ahead and widen the Paseo del Altillo road into a 2-lane set up even though Madrid has not approved the works on the Paseo Prieto Moreno (which runs between the Paseo and the Rock); and approval which he considers that is very doubtful.

ALM Paseo Prieto Moreno OnLTherefore, he argues, what is the point of spending all that money on changing the Altillo road if the Prieto one could remain one-way?

Editorial comment: the businesses on top of the Altillo have never recovered from the four year that the whole area was closed off to build the paseo and underground car park, and now they’re going to close it off again, ripping up the gardened area to accommodate a wider road, running the risk of not finishing before Easter. This is not something that businesses in the area need.
