We have published several articles over the past few years about these ‘cold callers’ who wear clothing very similar to that worn by Repsol representatives and try to convince householders that they require a ‘gas safety check.’ They then have a quick look around your appliances, which is swiftly followed by a huge bill.
Well, a local resident has informed us that these rather unsavoury characters are doing the rounds on the Costa Tropical again, specifically in the Almuñécar/La Herradura areas. No doubt they will get around to other towns very soon.
The latest incident has seen a cursory 10-minute safety check result in a 300 euro bill. Luckily, the householder was not happy with this and contacted the Guardia Civil and the matter was resolved.
Just remember readers, these people are legal… they are gas fitters, working for a legitimate company. The issue here is their tactics, which lean towards convincing the householder that the safety checks are compulsory, they are not. Any compulsory check of your gas fittings would be carried out by a Repsol engineer, who would not just turn up at your door, but would attend following a letter or telephone call from you; i.e., they won’t come unless you contact them first, requesting a safety check.
On a final note; please also keep an eye on any vulnerable neighbours you may have who are easy prey for the likes of these people.
