Fatal Salobreña Road Accident

A driver was killed instantly when his car ploughed into a jack-knifed lorry on a blind bend, heading out of La Caleta in the Hotel Salobreña direction.

The accident occurred at 09.40h on Thursday the 7th of March on this treacherous bend that has caught many drivers out, approaching too fast from the west. The bend is tight and down hill with two lanes coming up. As the outer lane of the oncoming traffic is an overtaking lane, many head-on collision prove to fatal. A further problem is that there is no road sign warning drivers of how tight the bend is.

On this occasion, the road was wet from the constant rain and the lorry driver realised too late that he was going too fast, tried to brake and consequently jack-knifed.

The driver approaching from the opposite direction, accelerating to overtake the slower traffic moving up the hill, did not see the stricken lorry as it is a blind bend – there was no time to take any evasive action whatsoever. The driver, who was from Córdoba, died instantly whilst the lorry driver was taken to Hospital Santa Ana in Motril, with minor injuries.

Locals have campaigned on many occasions for some signposting further up the hill to alert drivers to the severity of the bend.
