Mayor Assaulted

The Mayor of Salobreña, Gonzalo Fernández Pulido (PSOE), was insulted and physically assaulted by an irate local over the weekend of the 9th/10th.

The 30-year-old aggressor turned himself in to the Guardia Civil post in Salobreña today, after initially evading arrest by a municipal policeman, who he also reportedly attacked.

The condemnation of this act has been unanimous right across the political spectrum. Joining the condemnation was the Chairman of the Asociación de Comerciantes y Empresarios de Salobreña, José Casas Sánchez, who expressed his most absolute disgust.

The Mayor’s political party called on all political parties to reduce the level of antagonism between them and to reflect on the situation, in order “maintain peaceful coexistence.”

The Mayor is expected to make a declaration before the police tomorrow. More information will be forthcoming as the week unfolds.
