Salobreña Cuts Back

Whilst the governing parties in many towns in Spain have announced that the mayor and councillors will give up their Christmas bonus, the Town Hall of Salobreña wants to go a step further and cut the funds that political parties receive from the municipal coffers, which in this case adds up to 21,700 euros. That is the proposal that the governing party will put forward at the next council meeting and it would be political suicide for any of the opposition parties to vote against it, of course.

Town-hall staff had gathered in front of the building to show their disapproval of the announced measures to be taken, by the Central Government. Almost the entire staff gathered at 10.00h, backed by the Mayor, Gonzalo Fernández Pulido, and his councillors.

“We must give an example, and given the present circumstances it is only just that politicians should take part,” he said. He also pointed out that in Salobreña, unlike other municipalities, the spending ‘adjustments’ (the vogue euphemism for ‘cuts’) have not entailed the destruction of jobs – all the posts that existed before still exist now.
