Carlos Rojas was sworn in for his second term, pledging in his acceptance speech several key issues.
Firstly, he made a priority of pressuring for a rapid conclusion of the A-7 roadworks, calling on all other parties to support this effort. He also called for a joint effort to accelerate the work on the port industrial estate and the water-distribution for the Rules Dam.
He considered that the conclusion of the water-distribution network to be imperative, as it would boost a flagging agricultural sector, which has recently suffered the extra blow of the Ecoli outbreak in Germany and the subsequent unjust boycott of Spanish vegetables, especially cucumbers.
Returning to the call for a united, inter-party front to foster the economic recovery of Motril, he said, “I’m referring to such dynamic employment projects as the creation of hotel and residential spaces around Casa Bates, or the inland marina for Playa Granada, which will need all kinds of ‘fluidity’ in paperwork and authorisation from the Central and Regional administrative authorities.”
The Mayor announced the creation of a Territorial & Sustainability Management Board, combining the Urban Development Department, the Environment Department and Public Works Department. He announced that they would give priority to projects that created employment, using complete transparency and maximum efficiency.
There will also be a new department that will cover all the municipal dependencies, such as Garnatilla, etc., entitled: Delegación de Coordinación de Anejos. This department will be headed by Concepción Abarca, who will also be the maximum authority for Carchuna and Calahonda.
Two new additions to the Town Council are Alfredo Tovar, who will be in charge of the Delegación de Presidencia, Comunicación y Nuevas Tecnologías. Manuel Ballesteros, will head the Concejalía de Movilidad y Seguridad, which will include the Fire Service, Traffic Control, Transport and Protección Civil.
Unfortunately, the mind-boggling system of having a First, Second and Third, Vice-Mayor – with their corresponding salaries – continues:
Jose Garcia Fuentes will take on Sports and Tourism, as well as Economy and Interior, as First Vice-Mayor.
The Second, Vice-Mayor is Nicolás Navarro, who will continue as the Head of Cultura, Fiestas y Juventud, but also take on Mantenimiento de la Ciudad, which in itself includes, Beaches, Parks and Gardens, as well as Agriculture.
Finally, in the multiple Vice-Mayor category, the Third Vice-Mayor is Ángeles López Cano, who remains as the Head of Acción Social.
Manuela Santiago and Teresa Morales retain the top jobs in Formación Empleo and Comercio, and Inmigración & Pesca, respectively.
So there you go; now you know who’s who in the Town Hall Crew.
