Motril and neighbouring ward, Torrenueva, don’t enjoy the best relationship, and in a dispute over funds owing, seven Torrenueveños neighbours, including the mayor, had locked themselves in the Motril Town Hall.
Consequently, 15 local police were called in to dislodge the squatters, which has caused Socialist aspirant to the Mayoralty for Motril, Flor Almón, to accuse Mayor Carlos Rojas (PP) of unnecessary force inspired by a despotic and fascist attitude. Tough talking.
Typically, Security Councilman, José García Fuentes, has denied the charges of excessive force, adding that every cent owed to Torrenueva has not only been paid, but that the accounting books, show that Motril has given an extra €42,000 over and above what was owed (so there, nyah, nyah).
He also said that if people wanted to occupy and protest, then they should do it in their own Town Hall. The Torrenueveños have countered his figures with one of half a million euros still owing.
What is the truth here and how do we reach it? Probably by discounting both sides’ stories and landing somewhere in the middle.
