Cuddly Sing-along and Melancholy Tango

Sweden and Finland offer fantastic musical events during this summer, with chamber music, opera, jazz, rock festivals, you name it. There are gigs and festivals for every taste, but I would like here to take up two of the most typical and folksy summer festivities; Sing-along at Skansen in Stockholm (Allsång på Skansen) and the Finnish Tango Festival in Seinäjoki , Southern Ostrobothnia.

Hornet Sex Hoax?

Why let the truth get in the way of a good story… or so the saying goes. But we have to confess to being more than a tad disappointed that this story, that was doing the worldwide rounds of the Internet, may well be a hoax. It concerns a Swedish farmer called Hasse and his death by sexual intercourse with a hornet’s nest.

Estonian Swedes

At Los Nordicos last week we had the privilege to listen to an interesting lecture by historian Bengt Kummel, PhD, from Finland. The topic was “The dramatic circumstances around the transfer of Estonian Swedes to Sweden in 1944”. Dr. Kummel started by giving some historic data on the Swedish population of Estonia, a linguistic minority residing in the coastal areas and islands of what today is western and northern Estonia.

Culture in the Rain

We arrived at our hotel in Tällberg in pouring rain, and thus did not see much of the beautiful landscape. It has been said that, “If you are visiting Sweden and the county of Dalecarlia without visiting Tällberg, it’s like attending a wedding without meeting the bride.”

Prison Switch

A 37-year-old Swedish man from Stockholm managed to convince a friend to serve his prison sentence for him. He even paid him for taking on the ‘convict sitting’ post.

Good News

In this world of political and economic turmoil, it is very rare to hear something positive in the media. But at seven o’clock in the morning on Thursday February 23rd, while having our coffee and croissants, we heard some wonderful news on the television. A girl had been born to Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.

Nordic Viewpoint

I would guess that more than 1000 people, mostly seniors, from the Nordic countries spend from 2-8 months in Almuñécar every year, enjoying the tropical climate, healthy food, good wine and friendly atmosphere that the town has to offer.

Autumn is Here

The older you get, the faster time flies. The signs of autumn are beginning to show here up North. The days are shorter, it is raining a lot, the forests are full of lingonberries and mushrooms and the elk hunt started today 24.9.

All you culture vultures will be pleased to hear that there will be an art exhibition by Los Nórdicos in the Casa de la Cultura, Almuñécar starting on November 14th and running through until the 21st.
