Casa Garach

The Motril Town Council has approved a change to the building category of the historic and centric building known as Casa Garach, which will allow it to be turned into a hotel.

Politicians’ Salaries Criticised

The IU councillor in the Almuñécar Town Council has called for the Mayoress, Trinidad Herrera, and chief opposition councillor (ex-mayor), Juan Carlos Benavides to take pay cuts. The IU councillor, Fermín Tejero, who called for this, rejected a salary upon taking up his post.

The first avocado trees to be planted on the coast of Andalucia – in the whole of Spain, were planted by a German in Almuñécar in the 1950’s He had toured the entire coast before settling for a small hillside overlooking the Rio Verde valley, which at the time was covered in sugar cane.

IU Denounces Underhand Manoeuvrings

The Izquierda Unida has denounced what they consider to be ‘dirty tricks’ within the Town Hall concerning the recently reinstated workers: an anonymous letter is being circulated between the municipal offices, rejecting the reincorporation of these workers.

The Empire Strikes Back

The Motril Town Hall has issued a press release in response to the local IU party’s criticism of the inland-marina project. They want to know on what information the IU based its findings that state the marina project would cause damage to the Charca de Suarez bird sanctuary.

Citizen Advice Bureau Deficiencies

At the moment, the Almunecar Town Hall has an Atención a Los Consumidores y Usuarias service, thanks to an agreement with the Unión de Consumidores de Granada (UCA). This service is basically a citizens’ Advice Bureau; i.e., somewhere where people can obtain information concerning their rights as consumers and lodge complaints against abuses.

7 Star in Trouble

According to the IU (left-wing coalition) the Junta called on the Almunecar Town Hall to annul the building licence for the 7-star hotel in Cotobro on the Penon del Lobo on the 30th of June, days before the local elections.

Cotobro Beach Controversy

Today, there was an article in the provincial press, concerning Cotobro Beach, or more accurately, the lack of it: the gale at the beginning of the week had wiped it out. The Town Hall was desperate to repair the damage as the summer season is upon us. The headline was: Botch-job solution for Cotobro Beach

The Mayoress Promises…

Trinidad Herrera made her intentions very clear during her acceptance speech, which drew enthusiastic applause from the packed-out public: she would base her term in office on three pillars: dialogue, dialogue & dialogue, meaning that there would be no more political tension between parties.

Salobrena’s New Socialist Mayor

Socialist, Gonzalo Fernández Pulido, was sworn in as the new Mayor of Salobreña, as expected, leading a minority governing council. Like the town’s neighbour, Almuñécar, the Mayor will have to strike deals on major voting issues during the next four years, which will inevitably translate into ceding political stances in order to get the necessary motions through.
