GENA-Ecologistas en Acción has reported a continuous discharge of untreated sewage near Maro beach, both to the Town Hall and Costas.
People bathing in the sea brought the problem to the attention of this ecologist group, complaining about the stench near the Cascada Grande, so they investigated.

Inspecting the area they found traces of sewage along the Barranco del Arco to where it reaches the sea. For this reason the ecologists suspect that Camping Nerja Villa de Mar could be the the main source, after considering that its deteriorated sewage storage tanks are leaking and creating foul-smelling pools.
They consider that the evacuation system is failing, allowing sewage waste to flow down hill past Maro into the sea near major tourist attractions.
However, the campsite is not the only suspect because GENA also consider that a local chiringuito could be contributing to the unacceptable situation as the ecologists had noticed “suspicious bubbling” near the shore.
GENA calls it “regrettable” that these facilities remain unconnected to the municipal sewage network, despite Nerja’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (EDAR) being in operation since October 2020.
This is not the first incident; GENA previously reported sewage leaks in the same barranco in November 2023, also blaming the camping site.
The ecologists are joined by the La plataforma Acción por Maro y su Agricultura (AMA) in this complaint, criticising the Town Hall for promoting the idea that the town is a “paradise” whilst ignoring these problems.
Editorial comment: Well, what do you expect from a Mayor who happily let builders and his own Town Hall to use a protected area as a dumping ground… and get clean away with it.

We look forward to the building of many hotels between la Caleta and Playa Granada. Of course these maybe 500 room hotels and the supporting businesses will comply with all regulations. Just don’t swallow any sea water and shower after a dip. Trust me. All is well.
