Reina Sofia Invites Top Chef

Miguel Castilla, owner of Restaurante Reina Sofia on the paseo of that same name, is always finding ways to bring new gastronomic ideas to Almunecar. For the second time, he has invited a top chef to come down to Almunecar and co-host a ‘gastronomic day.’

Desperate Arrivals

More or less since the late spring the eastern coast of Andalucia, including the Costa Tropical, has been receiving dozens of illegal immigrants in desperate conditions striving to reach land – undetected.

Awe Inspiring

I could have used the word ‘awesome’ but it has lost a lot of impact as an adjective due to overuse in everyday conversation. No, the only way to describe Almunecar’s annual firework display on the night of the 15th is that it inspired awe in just about everybody that witnessed it.

Dead Dolphin on Salobrena Beach

The carcass of a large dolphin was washed up onto one of Salobrena’s beaches yesterday. The Spanish name is delfin calderon but is known as a Risso’s dolphin, (grampus griseus) after the chap who first described them in 1812.

Black Magic in the Mountains

OK, so there isn’t much black magic going on up in the Alpujarra, but there are a lot of witches and wizards in Soportujar – even if it is just fancy dress – thanks to the III Feria de Embrujo de Soportujar.

Salobrena & Cheese!

On the 19th and 20th of this month, the Mercado de Queso Tradicional de Andalucia will be offering the top traditional cheeses to the townsfolk and holidaymakers in Salobrena – certainly not to be sniffed at!

Costa Tropical Hotel Blues?

The 13th of August was the only day, so far, that hotels on the Costa Tropical were 100% full – campsites, however, have been full on the last two weekends at least.
