A member of the Almuñécar municipal police stands accused of obtaining a woman’s purse through dishonest means and using her credit cards to draw out over 2,150 euros in cash.
The woman had inadvertently left her purse/wallet at the police station whilst in the office that deals with traffic fines. The accused was on duty at the time and allegedly took the opportunity to keep the purse/wallet instead of registering it as lost property.
A couple of days later, the policeman reportedly set off early, withdrawing money at cash points in Almuñécar, Salobreña and Zaidín, which is a barrio of Granada city. It was at one of these machines that he was identified by the security camera.
To make amends, the policeman later returned the money to the victim, which will be taken into account at his trial. The Public Prosecutor is recommending a 30-month prison sentence and four years suspension from serving as a police officer.
Readers might unconsciously raise an eyebrow at the thought of this person, if found guilty and having served a prison sentence, being able to return to police work – it does sound remarkably illogical, admittedly.
