School Failure Too High

Eight out of every ten pupils in Motril fail their end-of term-exams. A study carried out by the Asociaciones de Padres y Madres de Alumnos found that only 16% of pupils pass these exams, which means that things are just as grim as the 2008/2009 school year.

Hands Off

The Regional Council for Culture has said ‘hands off’ to the Town Hall over their plans to demolish the Alcoholera (The old building where the municipal TV station is housed, between the park and La Esplanada)

500th Birthday

Did you know that La Iglesia Mayor is having its 500th birthday – that’s a lot of candles! This church-cum-fortress has withstood pirate raids and earthquakes – even a sacking during the Spanish Civil War, so it could do with a spot of restoration work.

Beetle Doom

The Escarabajo (red beetle) has now well and truly got its clutches into the Washington palm trees on the coast and has set off an alarm signal from the Agricultural Department of Parks and Gardens in Motril

Telefonica Abuse?

Telefónica phone abuse? We have been hearing stories of foreign residents here with Telefónica phone connections that have noticed high charges being made on their bills when they are not even in the country and no one is using the house!

Brave New Beginning

Who is Susie MacLean? Well, in my opinion, she is a walking encyclopedia about the history and culture of Spain. Her Scottish last name is misleading, as she is actually from Denmark. One day, 10 years ago, she made a spontaneous decision to board a plane heading for Spain. It was an impulsive decision that would change the course of her life.

Competitiveness in the Family

The question is; should a parent actively encourage their children to be competitive?
I read an article recently that said for Donald Trump’s children family holidays were a very competitive affair. His son, Eric, recalls that when skiing in Aspen, his father was so keen to beat his children in races that he would push them over or hold them back with a ski pole. Imagine a grown man pushing over a 10 -year old to win a race!

Flying through the Ashes

Thousands of people have been stranded in airports all over the world, waiting for the clouds of ashes from the Islandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull to disappear from the North European air space. Scientists have warned that this eruption could trigger the nearby Katla volcano to erupt.

Watch Your Step!

When obstacles on the ground are viewed through the lower segment of multi-focal glasses, vision can be blurred and depth perception can be impaired. This phenomenon presumably explains the observation that older adults who wear multi-focal glasses are at elevated risk of tripping.

La Joyería Danesa

Most of us in the Danish community know Ebbe and Violette, the gifted jewellery-designer-duo who own La Tienda Danesa in Almuñécar. Their shop is a treasure trove of exquisite jewellery. It is impossible not to fall for one of their unique pieces. Trust me; I know. I went there today and saw a beautiful necklace…

Curas en Pecado

Corrían aquéllos turbios años 60 cuando la educación de una buena parte de la infancia española había sido confiada al clero y a sus muchos centros repartidos por nuestra geografía y gestionados por distintas congregaciones religiosas.

Paddy the Wolfhound

The weather has been a bit better and so we’ve been out fixing the fence and the driveway, as best we can. Need a digger really. It’s the first time in a while we’ve had a chance to watch the dogs. They’ve started this completely new game thing and I swear to you I think they talk to each other.
