The project to turn the castle – formerly the old Guardia Civil post – into a Centro de Interpretación (museum) appears to have bitten the dust, thanks to the opposition of the provincial Tourist Board of the Junta de Andalucía, despite it being chosen locally over four other projects, including work on Almuñécar’s San Miguel Castle.
The Town Hall considers this a political decision taken by the PSOE-run provincial tourism board.
The La Herradura project had a budget of 320,000 euros and would cover the castle’s role in the Defence of the Kingdom of Granada.
During the reign of Carlos III a lot of coastal defence work all along the coast from Algeciras to Murcia was carried out, including the La Herradura and Almuñécar castles and a long string of coastal watchtowers (atalayas).
