Although the winter rains have not be intense, they have been abundant, which has led to the water table rising and the Roman aqueduct gardens flooding again, which is hardly surprising seeing as they are standing on a base several metres below ground level; i.e., ground level during Roman times.
Has the Town Hall considered turning it into a permanent boating lake – just a thought!
The water table has also made a star appearance in the P-4, where the bullring is planned. Synchronised swimming displays ‘a-la-Esther Williams’ of bullfighters and waterproof bulls in pink swimming costumes could pull in the eagerly sought-after tourists, of course.
Finally – and struggling to hold back images of a waterborne, camp bull – it is worth mentioning that it is not only public monuments and building land that is fighting off the rising water levels, but also many apartment blocks, whose block administrations have to finance the continual consumption of electricity to work pumps keeping the water out of underground parking areas and lift shafts.
