It’s never a good idea to pick a squabble with Guardia Civil officers who have the intention of stopping you at a road block, which is what a 20-year-old man in Órgiva discovered.
He faced being charged with reckless driving, driving without a licence and driving under the influence of alcohol & drugs, so what they heck; why not a spot of physical violence against the Green Meanies?
The incident took place on the afternoon of Friday, the 4th of September when a mildly bored Guardia Civil patrol near Torvizcón observed a vehicle travelling along the A-348 main road heading in the direction of Órgiva. The driver was being a tad unconventional at the wheel, experimenting with driving a-la-Anglaise; i.e., on the wrong side of the road, more often than not.
The officers, sensing a spot of sport, fired up the lights and sirens and signalled the driver to stop. Imagine their surprise… and glee, when he sped off instead.
No doubt feeling generous, they decided to radio in for support and a patrol from Órgiva responded and set up a roadblock several kilometres ahead of the slippery driver, on the A-348/A-346 junction.
When the vehicle reached the checkpoint, (the officers had got out of the car and were waving for him to stop — this is unofficially known as ‘ridiculous optimism’) the driver first attempted to run over of the Guardia Civil officer standing on the right-hand side of the road, who took shelter behind a wall. Next, the driver steered the vehicle toward another officer located a few metres further down on the left-hand side, forcing him to step back and draw his service weapon, which normal means ‘play time over.’
But the vehicle continued its flight, swerving around the parked-across-the-road, patrol car and taking the A-346 through the tunnel, was merrily heading for Vélez de Benaudalla.
With the Torvizcón patrol hot on his heels, he again decided that both lanes were at his disposal but smacked into an oncoming vehicle — fortunately, its occupants were uninjured.
The police arrived, dragged him out of the car, expressed their discontent with the fellow, cuffed him and whisked him off to their Órgiva swap shop.
As mentioned above, he tested positive on the alcohol and drug tests, and it was also verified that he lacked any type of driver’s licence or even a whisper of common sense. He was held in police custody until Monday when he was brought before a magistrate.
