Two Guardia Civil Guard officers lost their lives yesterday after a collision between to police launches whilst in pursuit of a narco RIB off the coast Huelva.

Another officer was seriously injured and a fourth officer suffered more minor injuries.

The collision occurred around 11.00h some 148 kilometres off the Costa de la Luz during a high speed chase near the the Punta Umbría and Mazagón: Patrol Boat, Río Antas (a very fast, 13-metre vessel specialised in intercepting speedboats) and a 12-metre RIB which had the four victims crewing it.

For reasons that are still not clear, the crew lost control of patrol boat Río Antas whilst manoeuvring during the chase causing it to ram into the other Guardia craft.

The drug-runnng, 14m, zodiac powered by three engines, took advantage of the confusion to make good its escape.
