The last Saturday of last month, the Guardia Civil Guard were very busy, carrying out four rescues, involving seven people and one fatality.
Two of the rescues we have already covered online; one in Nigüelas where a man died abseling down Rio Torrente and the other was around half five in the morning where an angler had fallen down a cliff and had to be winched up into a helicopter.
Of the remaining two call outs that have not been covered elsewhere, one was at 11:40h involving two climbers; a 49-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man, who were stuck in the Canuto del Veleta; an area prone to falling ice and rocks. The Mountain-rescue team arrived in their Guardia Civil helicopter. Landing was extremely difficult given the snow conditions.
To reach the couple, the rescuers had to traverse unstable, melting ice with a drop of 120m below them down into a deep crevasses.
After securing an anchor point, the climbers were lowered safely. During the descent, one rescuer was hit by a snow and rock avalanche but was saved by his safety line. The rescue concluded around 15:15h in the Virgen de las Nieves area.
The other incident that has not been covered occurred at 16:30h involving four climbers, aged 32 to 42, stranded on a ridge in the Tajos de la Virgen area of the Sierra Nevada. Two team members were sent from the above- mentioned Nigüelas rescue and dropped off via a partial helicopter landing. The four climbers were evacuated requiring two trips to Hospital Virgen de las Nieves area in perfect health.
