Cowboy Builder in The Dock

If you’re not a native speaker of English you might not understand the term ‘cowboy’ when referring to a builder; it means somebody who is very unprofessional and botches jobs.

OK, so this is an article about an alleged, cowboy builder who started off as an odd-jobs man but afterwards reportedly got it into his head that he was a bona-fide builder and ended up with a team of 30 people working for him.

Well, the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office has accused him of false advertising and fraud. For example, the builder claimed on internet that his company had been in business for 30 years with between 10 and 30 employees on the payroll. In reality he was only registered as a self-employed, construction worker for minor masonry jobs.

Reality caught up with h im in August 2020 after he was hired to build a house in Pinos Puente and the agreed price for the job was 27,000 euros, with a down payment, in cash, of 13,500 euros. But it appears that he had bitten off more than he could chew, as far as his professional capacity went.

There weren’t tens of employees to help him; it was just him and what he built was such a mess that it was uninhabitable.

An expert called in to find a solution concluded that best thing would be just to demolish it. Realising that he was done for (allegedly) he said that he would not continue and sent the victim a bill for 13,000 euros for “work carried out,” which by happy coincidence was the exact amount that he had already received.

If found guilty, is faces two years’ imprisonment or, given that he is a foreigner, deported and prohibited from returning for a period of five years.

Editorial comment: we wonder what nationality he was?
