Illegal Dumps in the Axarquía

The Guardia Civil in the Axarquia (Málaga) have been busy tracking and arresting the cultprits behind the dumping of 160,000 tonnes of building rubble and other waste.

Police operation, Operación Cover,  investigated twelve individuals and three legal entities for alleged crimes against the environment.

According to the police, press release, the suspects, who are linked to the construction and earthmoving sectors, allegedly bypassed legal waste-management controls and simply dumped building waste on rural land to avoid the costs of using waste-treatment plants.

Amongst the rubbish inspected by the police, they found toxic elements such as asbestos. Asbestos is not only a problem for those coming into close contact with it when it is handled, when dumped its toxicity can end up reaching the water table.

This sort of thing brings to mind the scandal of the illegal dump (Río de la Miel quarry) used by the Nerja Town Hall, over which the Mayor, José Alberto Armijo, got off scot free, as did the Councilor for Urban Planning, Nieves Atencia and the six businessmen who stood before a judge .

During the time that this illegal dump was operative, which was between 1998 and 2016, more than 802,000 cubic metres of all types of waste accumulated in this old Nerja quarry, which, by the way, is within the Sierra Almijara Natural Park.
