Repairs to Winter Storm Damage

The Central Government through its regional office has announced that beach-repair work will start at the beginning of April - hopefully not during Semana Santa!

The Head of this department, Pedro Fernández, explained that they had approved a budget of 2.9m euros for the Provincial Coastal Service, better known as Costas.

This work will be a “comprehensive regeneration” of storm-hit beaches such as El Pozuelo in Albuñol. (See Photo).

Considering that the winter gales have officially been calculated to have affected 80 kilometres of coastline – bear in mind that the approximate length of the Costa Tropical from end to end is 73 kilometres – it is not clear where those extra kilometres were found.

Another point is not all the coastline consists of beaches so the rocky headlands and cliffs, such as Cerro Gordo and Punta de la Mona (La Herradura) and between Calahonda and Castell de Ferro didn’t exactly receive storm damage, but never mind.

The aim is to have the coastline ready for tourists by the start of the high season; i.e., San Juan on the 23rd of June.

The areas that will receive attention are:

  • Salobreña: Guadalfeo delta, La Charca, and La Cagailla.
  • Motril & Torrenueva Costa: Punta del Santo.
  • Almuñécar: Four different beaches.
  • Eastern Costa Tropical: Castillo de Baños (Polopos-La Mamola), La Rábita, and El Pozuelo (Albuñol).

The main problem has been the massive loss of sand. On El Pozuelo, the wave action was so severe it exposed the old promenade support walls.

And when we talk of wave action, there were reports of some waves exceeding six metres; the highest recorded in the Mar de Alboran area, which shifted 10-tonne blocks at the Punta del Santo breakwater.

Therefore and summing up, the work will be replacing lost sand and repearing breakwaters.
