Doctors in the public health system have called for a strike starting February the 16th, continuing the strike action that began in recent months.
The protest, which includes strike days and rallies held within Motril, is against the draft Framework Statute (Estatuto Marco) drawn up by the Ministry of Health.
Doctors, nurses and other health-care workers consider that the current draft “does not recognise the particularities of medical practice, nor the high level of responsibility, training, and care-load assumed by this sector.” According to the organisers, the text “equates doctors to other healthcare profiles without addressing their specific conditions.”
Among the main demands expressed in Motril are the requirement for their own Estatuto Médico y Facultativo, fair regulation of on-call shifts, an end to excessive working hours, and the improvement to working conditions to guarantee professional safety and the quality of patient care.
Doctors warn that overwork and the lack of professional recognition affect not only their occupational health but also the functioning of the public-health system.
The strike on the 16th is part of a nationwide conflict and could affect non-urgent healthcare activity, although minimum services will guarantee emergency care and vital attention.
