Playa Granada might be expanding but there has always been a lack of amenities such as shops, bank branches and pharmacists down there. This will be changing.
The Minister of Health for the Junta de Andalucía has recently authorised the opening of a pharmacy in this part of Motril’s beach area.
To be more accurate, what they have permitted is a botiquín farmacéutico, which is a sub-branch of a main pharmacy in an area where no other pharmacy exists.
The licences for pharmacies are strictly controlled in Spain and are awarded according to the size of a population in a particular area – you can’t just open one up where you want.
The decision dictates that the assignment of this first-aid pharmacy (botiquín) falls to a local pharmacist, whose owner must request and obtain the operating authorisation for the designated premises within six months of receiving notification.
In other words, an established pharmacist in Motril has six months to put forward their name to open up this kind of establishment in a designated premises.
As for Motril Town Hall, it points out the importance of installing a pharmaceutical establishment in the Playa Granada area, a district of Motril that has seen tremendous growth in recent years. From an urban-planning perspective, Playa Granada has approximately 3,000 dwellings; a figure that is expected to rise because further building projects are currently under development.
