Wrong Tyres & Fines

Beware; your tyres, especially in this weather, could get you up to an 800-euros fine. Read on!

The Guardia Civil this month are carrying out a tyre-inspection campaign on the roads. The DGT activated a message on roadside panels that already hinted at the nature of these checks: “Check your tyres.”

OK, they not checking tyre pressure, although that doesn’t mean that they won’t, because they are looking at the amount of tread you have on tyres (which by law must be 1.6mm) and the condition of the rubber, ensuring it is not old, cracked, or showing fissures or bulges.

They’ll check the make of tyre and that those on the same axle match in tyre type, which also must match the specifications found in the vehicle’s technical-data sheet.

If they find that your car fails on any of these points, you’re looking at, up to, 800 less in your bank account because it is 200 for each ‘defective’ tyre.

The police can fine you for having normal tyres in areas where chains or M+S (Mud + Snow) tyres are obligatory because of recent snowfall in the region. Don’t venture up the Sierra Nevada without the right tyres, therefore.

Getting back to improper tyre pressure, this can endanger the safety of the vehicle and its occupants. If the pressure is excessive, it causes greater wear in the center of the tire. If it is too low, the wear of the rubber is more irregular, especially on the outer edges, which is something that officers will be looking for.
