Priest Caught with Drugs

The Policía Nacional arrested a priest in Torremolinos who just happened to have a quantity of designer drugs on him.

Father Carlos Loriente García, who is a 45-year-old priest who officiates within the Archdiocese of Toledo, when stopped had about ten tabs of a designer drug on him; a quantity that exceeds what is legally considered for “personal use.”

This man of the Cloth had rented a holiday flat in the city of Málaga which he shared with “several young people,” who were using the sort of stuff you wouldn’t be offered in a church service, together with holy wafers.

The arrest took place in the early hours of Monday the 22nd of last month after one of the party started began causing a scene on a balcony, threatening to jump to his death.

Well, officers soon arrived at the scene, calmed the wanna-be flying man down and searched his companions because the jumper was presumably seriously high. And lo! Amongst the priests possessions were the ten tabs or papeletas, to use the Spanish term,  of psychotropic substances (MDMA and mephedrone) or. The lyric, “I believe I can fly,” (from the musical score of film Space Jam) come to mind.

The priest also agreed to allow officers to search the apartment where they were staying, where they found traces of drug use, a precision scale, and a single-dose bag of drugs. The officers therefore proceeded to arrest him, and he was brought before Investigative Court No. 5 in Torremolinos.

The Archdiocese of Toledo issued a statement confirming the priest’s arrest and “deeply regretting the events that led to his arrest.” They also expressed their condemnation of any criminal conduct the priest may have committed and expressed “their full confidence in the justicial system.” In the meantime he has been provisionally suspended from the exercise of his ministry and his office.

“This Archdiocese asks forgiveness from the People of God for any moral damage that may be caused by the alleged crimes of a priest of the archdiocese,” the statement concludes.

Editorial comment: Why a priest had rented a holiday flat to share with young people, is open to speculation… considerable speculation. The stuff might not have been his but he offered to take the rap out of his Christian duty — it is possible. On the other hand, it must have been pretty obvious to him that with the precision drug-measuring equipment that his flat companions were not Kumbaya Kids, right?
