Asian Seaweed Menace

Towns along the Costa Tropical, Salobreña amongst them, have requested assistance from the Provincial Council to deal with the extra cost of removing Asian seaweed from their beaches.

Rugulopteryx Okamurae, as it is known by its scientific name, has become a pressing problem for seaside towns trying to keep their beaches free from this seaweed, which soon rots in the summer sun, attracting midget flies and smelling badly.

The Provincial Council held its latest Plenary Meeting, not in Granada, but in La Herradura, and it was there that the Salobreña socialist (PSOE) made this proposal known.

This said proposal calls for the Junta de Andalucía to take action to tackle this invasive species. Another proposal presented at the meeting was a call for use of raffia-fibre plastic to cover greenhouses to be eliminated.

Regional MP for the PSOE for the Coast, Flor Almón, singled out Albuñol as one of the most affected coastal municipalities and Salobreña Mayor Javier Ortega emphasised the problems caused by the presence of these invasive, marine plants, which the cleaning services are unable to keep up with.
