Beznar and Bacon-Beastie Visits

Wild boars are turning up everywhere, from the beaches on the coast to inland towns and even the streets in the city of Granada.

Well, Béznar is no stranger to these bristly visitors over the last couple of years, but patience is running thin and they want somebody to do something about it.

Béznar Councillor, Gustavo Vizcaíno, explained that they only used to come down from the mountains when in search of water and food, in summer, but that has changed with them regularly turning up in the area around the reservoir. The inlets and gullies are the perfect place to lay up during the hot day before coming out at night to rummage the area. But now they’re turning up on the village streets after dark.

The Councillor considers that the wild-boar population is “out of control” and it’s dangerous when a family group (sounder) comes in with the sows reacting aggressively to protect the young if they feel that there is a threat.

It’s the old problem, though, because, the Guardia Civil won’t do anything unless a citizen makes a formal denuncia, which most are unwilling to do; they just want the Guardia Civil to go out and shoot the critters.

Jose Antonio down at the waterside chiringuito belonging to the nautical club often sees them within a couple of metres from the tables where people are eating in the cooler evening air.

Mayor Pedro Titos said that the village council will contact hunting associations to try to find solutions to the problem.
