The Almuñécar Councillor for Public Works, Francisco Rodríguez, admitted that the work underway on the N-340 junctions through town could cause tail-backs.
Although he describes them as glorietas (roundabouts) only one of them is (Los Pinos) whilst the other three are simply traffic-light-controlled junctions: the Guardia Civil/Costa Banana, Las Palomas/gasolinera and P-4 junctions.

Work is scheduled to continue for the next two weeks, despite heavy, weekend traffic coming down from Granada for the coast and the disruption that it will cause.
He said that the said work will cause lane narrowing, traffic build-ups and even periodic lane closures but offers his apologies to drivers and residents who will be affected by this, promising that any tail-back caused by lane closure will only be “momentary,” and that alternative routes will be made available.
He considers that although the road works will be disruptive, it will be worth it when the junction embellishments are in place; hence the name that the Town Hall has given the project, El Gran Eje Verde.
Editorial comment: if the money spent on tarting up the existing, inadequate junctions, were spent instead on turning three of them into real roundabouts; thus doing away with the traffic lights, that would be a different matter.
