Affordable Housing & Rentals

The Motril spokesperson for IU, Inma Omiste, has criticised the widespread and unaffordable increase in rental and house prices in Motril.

Councillor Omiste says that prices have risen 11% in relation to last year and a whopping 75% in the last decade.

She considers that this increase is directly related to the proliferation of tourist accommodation, especially in the Playa Granada area; something that severely limits the existence of long-term rentals.

This situation, coupled with low salaries in Motril, she says, is making access to housing increasingly difficult for a growing number of people, especially young people.

She admits that this problem is not limited to Motril but is also something causing problems all over Spain.

Furthermore, Councillor Omiste says that between 2017 and 2025, only 40 government-subsidised dwellings were built, despite election pledges by the governing party to solve this deficiency and despite the existence of more than 400 applications for Publicly Affordable Housing (VPO).

VPOs are, what is known as council houses in the United Kingdom and a certain percentage of them must be included when a town Hall gives a construction developer a licence to build prime housing.

The Municipal Housing Plan approved in 2018 estimated the need for 2,332 VPOs over a ten-year period; a forecast that contrasts with the limited implementation recorded to date. Furthermore, IU denounces that not a single euro of Municipal Land Heritage (PMS) funds has been allocated to the construction or renovation of public housing, despite the fact that the Town Council received more than 922,000 euros from this project in 2024.
