Motril has activated its Low Emission Zone (ZBE) this week after approval in the latest Plenary Meeting of the Town Council.
The ZBE received its initial approval in a Plenary Meeting in October 2023 but it had to pass a period under public scrutiny on the Town Hall’s website so that the general public could raise any objections to it.

With its full implementation, Motril finally complies with national regulations, which require municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants to establish this measure.
During the first three years, nobody will be fined as this is considered an “adaption period” backed by informative campaigns to raise awareness. Data will be collected by street cameras that have been installed in these ZBE areas. Then, in 2028, only permited vehicles can enter the zone without receiving a 200-euro fine.
Whether a vehicle is permitted depends on the type of motor and age of internal-combustion engines; i.e., the obligatory certificate rating on the vehicle: Those with the 0 emissions, ECO and C stickers will be able to circulate freely, as well as vehicles with a B sticker. Also permitted will be those without a sticker but have been registered and pay the road tax (IVTM) in Motril; i.e., vehicles belonging to residents.
The new ZBE covers an area of 15.6 hectares, which includes the historic centre and commercial centre. Its boundaries include the streets: Avenida de Salobreña, José Felipe Soto, Plaza Tenerías, San Agustín, Ruiz, Señor de Junes and Rambla del Manjón to Camino de las Cañas.
Access control will be carried out through number-plate recognition cameras.
Unrestricted access will also be allowed for bicycles, e-Scooters and other personal mobility vehicles, as well as public transport, taxis, VTCs and goods vehicles.
Ambulances, police vehicles and those belonging to municipal services, as well as those belonging to people with reduced mobility, will be able to access with prior authorisation.
On the other hand, vehicles with a B sticker or without one (which are not registered in Motril) will not be able to circulate in the ZBE unless they obtain a special permit, otherwise from 2028 they will be fined if they enter without authorisation.

Reader’s comment: “Thank you for this summary! Yet, I find the third and last paragraph contradicting. Just to clarify : so when I am not a resident of Motril and have a B sticker on my car I can drive freely in the center of Motril? or only if I am a resident of Motril with a B sticker?” – Joost
Hi, Joost. If you are a resident of Motril, then you pay your car tax there, in which case, even if you car has a B-sticker, you can still drive in a Low Emission Zones. – Martin
