All You Need To Know

There is a very important event coming up on the 16th in Motril, where you wil have the chance to ask people in-the-know about what is going on urban-development wise, in Motril.

There will also be a Town Hall representative from Almuñécar, so it is not only about plans for Motril.

Yet, we’re not only talking about just people with their finger on the pulse of urban development from the province, because there will be international speakers two, specifically, from the University of East London, but more about them later.

The venue is the old sugar factory, Nuestra Señora del Pilar, which is on the road coming up from the Alcampo roundabout, leading to the hospital.

The talk starts at 09.00h and the people giving the chat are there, above all, to answer your questions and there will be an interpreter there, if you don’t feel confident formulating your questions yourself in Spanish.

This event, conceived as a space for debate and networking, aims to bring together the main players in the real-estate sector to explore the potential of the region as a unique destination to live, invest and develop sustainable projects.

…And talking of unique sustainable projects, of special interest for those that would like to see more eco-friendly building materials, then you will be interested in the chat on bricks made from bagasse (dried, sugarcane pulp). These bricks are called Sugarcrete, which is a play on concrete and sugar, perhaps.

The people producing these bricks are in India and they already have connections with the Algarve in Portugal, but the thing is, wouldn’t you rather see sugarcane fields back on the vega instead of cement? Could there be a future for sugarcane crops on the vegas of Salobreña and Motril? Well, it would be interesting to listen to what they have to say, wouldn’t it? And the “they” in question are Alan Chandler and Armor Gutiérrez Rivas, researchers from the Universidad de East London.

Now, this event on the 16th in the old sugar factory is not a free-entrance one as it costs 20 euros per person. You can obtain your ticket at https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/F7URPWJ9EKM5Y

The following is the programme:

First Block: Urban Development and Local Sustainability
● Juan Fernando Pérez Estévez, head of the urban planning and public works service of the Motril City Council, will talk about the strategic opportunities for real estate development in the city.
Óscar González, president of the Playa Granada Compensation Board, will present this project as a model of sustainable tourism development that preserves the natural spaces of the Costa Tropical.
Beatriz González Orce, Councilor for Tourism, Finance and Development and Employment of the Almuñécar – La Herradura City Council, will present the challenges and advances towards sustainable and responsible tourism in the most touristic municipality in the region.
Ana Carvajal, Arquima delegate in Andalusia, will address the advantages of industrialized construction in wood as an efficient, fast and sustainable solution.
Second Block: Material Innovation and New Global Trends
Alan Chandler and Armor Gutiérrez Rivas, British researchers from the University of East London, will present Sugarcrete®. A product designed to reduce the carbon footprint in construction. Made from sugar cane bagasse, it can be used to obtain insulating panels, lightweight blocks, load-bearing blocks and structural slabs for floors and roofs. Its potential is enormous, especially because it drastically reduces emissions and offers a construction material that is lighter, cheaper and more earthquake-resistant than concrete.
Valmiki Kempadoo, Entrepreneur and Real Estate Developer with extensive experience in sustainable real estate development in the Caribbean, will share his vision on sustainability applied to the tourism and residential sector using products such as Sugarcrete®
Julia Stekeete, Furniture Designer, Materials Researcher, Director of Bagaceira Project at the Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, will highlight the potential of bagasse to transform the built environment under circular economy principles. Case study: development of a bagasse-based acoustic panel system.
