To do this, Motril Town Hall is going to use funds from the Programa de Fomento de Empleo Agrario (PFEA), which, as its name suggest is really for helping rural employment; i.e., work on the land.
With 400,000 euros, the will be setting out large green areas close to the shore (not too close, of course) as well as reorganising the parking areas and providing sports & recreational facilities.
Mayor Luisa García Chamorro, accompanied by the Deputy Mayor for Agriculture, Antonio Escámez, and the Deputy Mayor for Beaches, José Peña, were there for a photo op as work commenced. Mayor Chamorro considers this a “unique opportunity to develop one of the areas with the greatest potential in the municipality.”
What she and her teams hope to create is a large coastal park, especially accessible and pedestrian friendly.
The reorganisation of traffic will be one of the keys to the project, reducing traffic to a single two-way lane that will facilitate mobility, while the parking lots will be moved to a strip parallel to the golf course, maintaining the same current capacity. In otherwords, no actual increasing in parking spaces, it seems.
There will also be the installation of modern lighting, loading/unloading areas, as well as spaces reserved for motorcycles.
Moving on to the sports and recreational facilities, the project includes children’s play areas, calisthenics areas and new petanque courts that will complement the volleyball and beach tennis courts that were already renovated in the summer of 2023.
Editorial comment: The mayor concluded by stating that the next step will be the “revegetation” of Playa de Poniente… if they keep dumping silt instead of sand on beaches to make up for sand loss, there will be no shortage of vegetation growing there… just saying!
