Flood-Zone Hotel?

The mayor of Almuñécar, Juanjo Ruiz Joya at reports in the press that the Daia Slow Beach Hotel La Herradura will sit on land that could suffer from floods.

The mayor of Almuñécar, Juanjo Ruiz Joya responded to reports in the press that the Daia Slow Beach Hotel La Herradura will sit on land that could suffer from floods.

Mayor Ruiz Joya firstly pointed out that work being carried out does not correspond to the hotel, but to the urban infrastructure of the MP96 with the Almuñécar PGOU (Urban Development Plan).

This work includes asphalting lanes, pavements, public lighting and the installation of mains water, sewage and mains electricy.

The Mayor pointed out that the construction of the hotel is scheduled for 2025 and that, before starting, a building licence needs to be drawn up and granted, as well as other paperwork.

“We want to emphasise that the Daia Slow Beach Hotel La Herradura will strictly comply with all current regulations,” he said.

Editorial comment: Carmenes del Mar was also approved and ‘complied’ with all the necessary paperwork, but we all know how that went. As for flooding, Hotel Playa Almuñécar (formerly Sol Melía) is sat within the water table and pumps have been keeping the water out, night and day, since it opened in 2001. Locals might also recall seeing this plot of land across from the beach in La Herradura underwater after heavy rains…
