The Almuñécar branch of the far-left party, IU, lodged several complaints about the ruling party's policy on fiestas during last year.
The IU considers that the ruling party (PP) spent too much on fiestas; money that could be better spent on other more pressing areas, because, according to the IU, Almuñécar spent more than double the quota for fiestas set aside by the budget for that year.

The IU says the increase was 135% more than the allotted budget, reaching almost one million euros. whereas the total budget for 2023 was only 11% higher than for 2022.
Party Spokesman, Francisco Fernández, said that the money was squandered whereas the Mayor replied that Councillor Fernández had to stop looking on it as an expense rather than an investment.
However, Councillor Fernández said that the problem was not so much the money that was spent on fiestas, but rather the cuts that were made in other budget sectors. Sectors, such as rural-lane maintenance, for example could, have done witht the extra money.
An extra 50,000 euros were spent on fiestas that could have gone on lane maintenance for Río Seco, Barranco de Casa Adelfa or on Barrio San Sebastian, for example.
