Nerja Town Hall has begun work on the parking area, which is next to the access roundabout from the old N-340.
When finished, it will provide 79, much needed parking spaces because in the village you would have trouble parking a Reliant Robin on its side (its habitual orientation, according to the Mr Bean and Top Gear series).
This project goes back almost three years; in the middle of the pandemic, in fact, and was the fruit of an agreement between the Town Hall and the Sociedad Azucarera Larios. However, it ran foul of ecologist groups, namely the Gabinete de Estudios de la Naturaleza (GENA)-Ecologistas en Acción, the Plataforma Otra Maro and Nerja es Posible.
After some hard bargaining, the original project that envisaged 145 parking spaces was reduced to just 79. A construction company won the bid (270,442 euros) which came from the municipal coffers. Additional tasks included the control of protected, plant species and checking for archaelogical remains when earth-moving work is being carried out
