Eco-Friendly Chiringos?

The Chairman of the Municipios de la Costa Tropical, Rafael Caballero, announced the launching of a new initiative for chiringuitos.

Their plan is to transform them from traditional chiringuitos to “sustainable establishments.” The initiative goes under the name of Plan Formativo y Dinamización de la Medida Tractora ECO-Chiringuitos, and has the objective of reducing the environmental impact of these beach concessions.

The Mancomunidad received a grant of 30,000 euros to this end from the Provincial Council and will work with the Asociación de Chiringuitos de la Costa Tropical de Granada.

Chairman Rafael Caballero explained that the plan will have several phases, including talks on environmental sustainability and include three courses.

The emphasis is on offering local produce, both agricultural and from fishing, plus using renewable energy (solar panels). The idea is that sourcing locally cuts down on road transport.

Editorial comment: Politicians have the word “sustainable” in their grip and are flinging it about everywhere, thinking that it’s a vote catcher. Growth and Sustainability are incompatible and contradictory. Neither will they be happy until they have squeezed the last desperate gasp of originality out of traditional establishments – for God’s sake leave the chiringos alone.
