The Guardia Civil mountain-rescue service was called out on Wednesday to rescue three hikers in the Sierra Nevada.; one in Monachil and the other two in Cerro Huenes.
Their first call out via 112 was at 14.15h to rescue a hiker who had suffered a fall along the a footpath, ending up on the bank of a river – this was in the Los Cahorros (Monachil)are
During the fall the victim had damaged his hip and couldn’t back up to the footpath, so once the rescue team reached him they applied a pelvic strap, and a neck brace before putting him on a stretcher and carrying him to where an ambulance was waiting.
The second call came in at 19.00h. The victims was an Australian man and a Chinese woman. They had lost their way along the Cerro Huenes hiking route near the Collado del Álamo end up stuck on a high rock formation (enriscado).
They were tired and had no water, as they had gone out without any equipment needed for hiking in the summer in Andalucía.
They were located around 22:20h, on this steep and rocky mountainside with a loose surface. The first thing that the rescue team did was give they both water and check them for injuries. Then roping them to the rescue-team members, they got the back up to the hiking path and from there back to the Guardia Civil vehicle.
They were taken back to their hotel in the city of Granada because they didn’t have their own vehicle – they had gone up to the Sierra Nevada on a bus but they had decided to return to the hotel on foot…
Editorial comment: you would have though that an Australian would have more common sense when going out in these weather conditions into a mountanous area.
