Jet Skis & The Summer

It should be pointed out, before continuing, that the problem is caused by private owners rather than those hired out by nautical-activity companies who keep a tight rein on their use.

During the San Juan bank holiday (puente), a Guardia Civil helicopter intercepted three individuals in front of San Cristóbal beach over the incorrect use of these machines (amongst them, using them too close to bathers) and fined them.

This was the first intervention as part of a joint operation between the Guardia Civil and the Policía Local to control the misuse of jet skis. They intended to start of with warnings, informing errant users on the correct use but the gloves will come off completely with the arrival of July, perhaps.

Almuñécar-La Herradura Town Hall will use drones again this summer to control their use; they will take footage of a jet ski and pass it onto the Guardia Civil to actually fine them, explained the Councillor for Beaches, Lucía González.

The trouble is that town halls have limited authority when it comes to combating jet skis that contravene norms on their use; i.e., limited jurisdiction after a certain distance from the beach, for instance.
