Sierra Nevada Rescues

The Guardia Civil moutain-rescue unit, GREIM, rescued two people in two separate call outs on Sierra Nevada last weekend.

GRA Sierra Nevada Rescue MR23Rescue climbers were called out around 13.00h on Saturday to go to the aid of a climber in the Corral del Veleta area of Sierra Nevada – one of them had become stuck on a rock face.

It appears that after suffering a short fall the climber had understandably lost her nerve.  Because there was a risk of an avalanche owing to the accumulated snow up there, the rescuers decided to move in and bring her out.

This they achieved and escorted her back to where she had left her car.

The second rescue mission was to help a skier who had suffered a fall in the Barranco del Guarnón area. The Guardia Civil rescue helicopter was sent to the scene of the accident to pick him up and take him to the PTS Hospital in Granada where he was admitted.

The Guardia Civil, mountain-rescue group warns those that venture up the Sierra Nevada to go climbing or cross-mountain skiing, or whatever activity they plan to carry out, that they must be very cautious because of the state of the accumulated snow, the ice sheets.
